Flupenthixol
When trying to find information on this medication I had a very difficult time. In the UK, low doses of flupenthixol go by the name of Fluanxol. Flupenthixol is also sometimes spelt flupentixol, with this form being used by the drug company (Lundbeck) more recently. High doses are called Depixol in the UK.
It’s a typical antipsychotic, of the thioxanthene class, along with Chlorprothixene, and Thiothixene. They are not all available in each country, and they are often grouped together in online information.
It is not known how a low dose of flupenthixol acts to improve depression, but it does so very quickly; within 2-3 days if it is going to have any effect.
Side effects
The most common side effect reported is feeling drowsy, sometimes with associated insomnia. Alcohol consumption increases the drowsiness, and is not advised. My personal experience was one of slight drowsiness, with mild headaches and blurred vision, as if I needed new glasses.
