It seems that the latest version of Wordpress (1.5.1.somthing) will automatically generate the .htaccess file, so we'll upgrade the site to use that and hopefully it'll be a doddle. Separate sidebars I would do by making a separate file for each sidebar (to make it more managable) and then including the relevant file depending on which section is being shown. Of course, that requires <em>knowing</em> which section is being displayed and I don't know how to do that bit yet. The Wordpress Codex should hopefully offer some help along those lines, though.
